A Key Role for Big Game in the United States

While wildlife conservation is often associated with national parks and public lands, much of the effort in the United States takes place on private property. Around 60 percent of the country’s land is privately owned, making ranches and agricultural areas crucial for the conservation of big game.
Especially in western states, working ranches—many of which have hunting interests—represent some of the last large, connected landscapes where species such as elk and mule deer can move freely. When properly managed, these lands provide food, cover, access to water, and vital migration corridors for wildlife.
New legislation and policy initiatives in the U.S. are therefore aimed at strengthening cooperation with private landowners. The goal is to promote wildlife-friendly land management through financial incentives, advisory support, and investments in infrastructure such as fencing and landscape planning that take wildlife movement into account.
This approach is based on voluntary participation rather than regulation and recognizes that conservation and production can go hand in hand. At the same time, it highlights that wildlife does not respect property boundaries, making cooperation across both private and public lands essential.
As a result, the future management of big game in the United States will depend heavily on private landowners and their role as both hunters and stewards of the land.
